Ace Hardware on how to clear snow speedily and efficiently: 1. Start by spreading ice melters when heavy wet snow, sleet or freezing rain begins. 2. Remove snow immediately, before it can become packed or turn to ice. 3. When shoveling, try to expose as much pavement as possible. The darker the visible surface, the more sunlight will get to the snow and ice. 4. If you are unable to remove a patch of ice, break it or crack it with an ice chisel or heavy duty sidewalk scraper tool. A simple crack helps expose the surface to the air so it can melt faster.
